Project Description

The main objective of this consultancy was to contribute and support the World Bank Technical Assistance (TA) activities to the Government of Iraq through collecting and analyzing data about the existing school infrastructure in the country, particularly in high seismicity areas. The results from this consultancy would inform the preparation of a prioritization framework and action plan to guide the formulation of Governorate level investment plans in school infrastructure, in line with the government’s National Policy on School Infrastructure.

Role of CEP in the Project

Collect and compile detailed information on sampled school infrastructure (schools) through field inspections, to support subsequent seismic performance and risk assessment.

Analyze the seismic performance and failure mechanisms of 4 major representative structural types of school buildings in the country, through nonlinear structural analysis.

Propose cost-efficient conceptual retrofit designs and estimate their unitary costs ($/sqm) indicatively for the 4 major representative structural types.

Strengthen the awareness and capacity of local stakeholders on understanding the seismic performance of major structural types of school buildings in the country, and cost-efficient retrofitting approaches for them.
